Staking vs mining yield calculator

Under your own inputs, which earns the higher net yield on the capital you put in: staking or mining?

Assumptions & limits

What the calculator takes as given, what it leaves out, and where the rules it relies on come from.

  1. Staking APY compounds at the frequency you select after validator commission.

  2. Mining uses 365.25/12 days per month for revenue and power costs.

  3. Hardware is straight-line amortized over lifetime months.

  4. Price volatility, pool luck and tax are not included.

How it works

The logic behind the result, step by step, with the formula the calculator uses.

  1. Staking net APY = (1 + APR×(1−commission)/n)^n − 1.

  2. Mining monthly net = revenue − electricity − amortization.

  3. Mining yearly yield = 12 × monthly net ÷ hardware cost.

  4. Bar heights compare the two net yearly yields under your inputs.

Worked example

One full calculation with the default inputs, so you can check each step against the calculator.

SCENARIO

Default inputs: staking net 7.5% vs mining −36.5% on $2,500 hardware — staking higher by 44.0 percentage points; mining payback never at default electricity and revenue.

Questions and answers

Short answers to the questions readers ask most about this calculation.

No. Advertised APR changes with network conditions and validator performance.

When electricity and amortization exceed revenue, monthly net is negative and annualized yield on hardware cost is negative.

Operating cash flow after electricity is not positive, so hardware cost is not recovered at the stated monthly profit.

More frequent compounding slightly raises effective APY for the same nominal APR.
